Bio: Elissa Walker Campbell
With radio in her genes and sports in her heart, it seems inevitable that Elissa Walker Campbell would rise to host and produce a national sports radio program. Dick Vermeil, Rick Carlisle, Red McCombs, Gary Patterson, Nancy Lieberman, Tony Dungy, and Del Harris are just a few of the greats featured on Elissa's The Big E Sports Show.
Born in Nashville, Tennessee, but spending most of her childhood in Great Falls, Montana, Elissa was raised on faith, family, country radio, – she's the daughter of the legendary Grand Ole Opry artist, Charlie Walker – and sports. As a senior, she became the all-time leading basketball scorer and rebounder at Great Fall's High, Elissa played for renowned coach Dick Kloppel and led the Lady Bison to the divisional and state finals. Recruited nationally, Elissa signed a full scholarship with University of Oklahoma where she earned degrees in journalism and communications.
Her passion for sports radio resulted in multiple Oklahoma Broadcasters Education Association (OBEA) awards. Her first big break in radio came by serving as Oklahoma's first women's basketball radio color commentator. Television soon followed and Elissa debuted as a color analyst for Prime Sports Television, followed by positions as an analyst and sideline reporter for Fox Sports, TNN, CBS Sports, and ESPN. During that time, she also held the position as Director of Sports Marketing for Pacific Star Communications. Working as a part-time sideline reporter with the NBA's Oklahoma City Thunder, Elissa covered some of the NBA's biggest stars including Kevin Durant, Russell Westbrook, and James Harden.
It was at Pacific Star that Elissa landed a new gig as host and executive producer of The Big E Sports Show. Under her leadership the show expanded to air on 20 stations and websites. The growth and quality of The Big E Sports Show drew the attention of YAHOO! SPORTS RADIO which picked up the program and debuted it nationally in September of 2013. Each week, Elissa takes her guests beyond the X's and O's and interviews some of the most recognizable names in the world of sports.
Elissa now resides in the Houston area with her husband, Steve, and their two sons, Stephen Jr. and Eli Walker. The passion and enthusiasm she displays in her work extends to her commitment to her family and devotion to God. An athlete at heart, Elissa is immeasurably proud of her boys who are active junior golfers and travel across the country with tournaments. Both have participated in the World Championships in Pinehurst, North Carolina. She enjoys caddying for her sons at their tournaments and coaching her younger son's basketball team. An athlete by nature, Elissa bikes and still plays pickup basketball at the local gym. She also celebrates the love of music instilled in her by her late father, including listening to his recordings, and other great talents such as Frank Sinatra, Tony Bennett, and George Winston. Elissa is committed to giving back to the community and has served on the board of several non-profit organizations, the Children's Advocacy Center, Big Brothers & Big Sisters, and the Board of Directors with Fellowship of Christian Athletes.
